The UK National Screening Committee has revised its recommendation on the screening of diabetic retinopathy. They now recommend that people with diabetes at low risk of sight loss should be screened every 2 years instead of annually. People at high risk of sight loss should continue to be screened annually.
Everyone aged 12 years and over with diabetes will be offered screening annually, and following two successive clear diabetic eye screening appointments, individuals will be classed as low risk for developing retinopathy. This recommendation has been supported by results from a large observational study and it is hoped that this revision will not only release capacity in the service, but also lessen the inconvenience for this group in attending appointments every year.
